Dollhouse premieres tonight

We’re only a few hours away from the premiere of the long-expected show. As a matter of course, “Dollhouse” started with a big buzz and soon encountered various obstacles such as rewrites and re-shots insomuch that many became concerned about its health. Eliza Dushku and Joss Whedon talked in different interviews about the origin, development of the show and also about its problems.
Believe it or not, the idea of Dollhouse saw the light when Eliza and Joss met for lunch. A few hours later, took shape what has to be a mind blowing show or as she says: “… it’s provocative. It’s disturbing in some ways. It’s controversial.” They will touch very sensitive topics as altering and programming people, desires, fantasies, sexuality and taboos.
“I think that it’s relevant and I think that it’s exciting because I’ve always wanted to do work that has to do with us evolving and questioning, making people uncomfortable I guess”, added Eliza Dushku.
Eliza plays a young woman named Echo, a member of a group of people known as “Actives” or “Dolls”. They live in a futuristic dormitory/laboratory, a hidden facility nicknamed “The Dollhouse”. The Actives are implanted with false memories and skills and then they’re hired for different assignments, crimes or fantasies. Which is the most interesting part of the show? After each assignment, her thoughts, feelings and experiences are erased… or so people think.
Fox executives were very excited about the project, but didn’t want an origin episode so the pilot was remade such as to let the audience know that Echo would be in a different place each week.
“Most of the changes (to “Dollhouse”) were about how we brought (the audience) in. It seemed like a no-brainer to give (Fox) something they can get behind more… we’re out to make people uncomfortable, but maybe not our bosses“, explained Joss Whedon and later added: “My concern isn’t whether the show gets saved, it’s whether the fans love it… At the end of the day my biggest concern is that I give them something worth panicking over.”

The episodes won’t be seen just from Echo’s point of view. They’ll come from other Actives, clients and in the sixth episode from the perspective of a normal man on the street. Eliza is very attracted to the role of Echo, a chameleon woman… “I have a lot of energy and an appetite for people and stories telling different stories and being in a different place and traveling and experiencing just different emotions.”
“One thing that Joss gave me in this project is the ability to sort of show some other colors of mine that other creators and other writers, directors, executive producers haven’t given me in the past, but he has seen them in me and wanted to give me the stage to act them out.” A big part of the mythology will be the fact that the characters that run The Dollhouse have their own secrets. Major storylines will develop on the progress. The viewers will find out what happened to the former “Dolls” and how long The Dollhouse has been operating.
Don’t miss “Ghost” tonight, the first episode of “Dollhouse”!
