After a tormenting waiting, “Dollhouse” finally premiered last Friday, but… did Joss Whedon’s new show live up to fans’ expectations? Considering his impressive resume, wasn’t surprising at all that the pilot was kind of intriguing with some really good scenes.

The beginning was wrapped in a shroud of mystery raising question after question about Caroline… Who is she? What did she do? Under compulsion, she signs a contract where through she volunteers for an experimental treatment. The show becomes even more confusing jumping immediately to a motorcycle race in a “The Fast and the Furious” style, a night in a club and finally in The Dollhouse. There, Caroline’s memories are wiped by sort of technician, named Topher, transforming her in Echo. For somebody who didn’t read before about the show, the events are quite cloudy, the fugitive moments are too slight to have a strong impact.

We also come to a top view over a Zen room where several people walk aimlessly. Meanwhile, Adelle Dewitt, the head of this evil organization and a true ice queen, transforms the kidnapping of a little girl in a simple business. As opposed to her, Echo’s handler, Boyd Langton, a former policeman, cares in a certain measure for the consequences of their actions. And there’s Dr. Claire Saunders, a therapist whose facial scars attest a traumatic past. Could she be a former “Doll”?
Elsewhere, FBI Agent Paul Ballard is subjected to a harsh interrogation concerning the “Dollhouse” case. During an investigation of 14 months, he physically threatened a senator, disrupted a seven year investigation and was arrested for trespassing on a yacht. Although his chase after Dollhouse tears to pieces his career and destroyed his marriage, he is decided to uncover the truth with any cost.

Echo’s first “engagement” is as a negotiator in a kidnapping case. She is implanted with the personality of Eleanor Penn including also her affections… myopia and asthma. The case gets out of hand when Ms. Penn has a breakdown due to the fact that she got through the same experience when she was a little girl. Eventually, she manages to decipher the case, but all becomes cloudy again. Echo’s memories are wiped and she joins the other “Actives” before we have the chance to see if they take the girl back to her father. The episode ended in a mysteriously strange way inspired from “Heroes”. Rather seems that “Dollhouse” has also its own Sylar.

The concept of the show isn’t quite original, actually I think it could be seen as a mixture between “Alias”, “Fringe” and “My Own Worst Enemy”, but is also too soon to label it as astonishing or fiasco.

What do you think of “Ghost”?
