Glee Season 1 Episode 1 Pilot

As Los Angeles Times’ Mary McNamara wrote, “Glee” is “the first show in a long time that’s just plain full-throttle, no-guilty-pleasure-rationalizations-necessary fun”. In a typical American high school, the youngsters are split in athletes, cheerleaders, nerds and… losers, those who can’t find their place in any of the above categories.
Tina Cohen-Chang, Rachel Berry, Mercedes Jones, Kurt Hummel and Artie Abrams are five outcasts who share the same interest… in music and singing. They decide to join the Glee Club and together become “New Directions”.
Sick and tired of being bullied by the cheerleaders and football players, imprisoned in the toilet or thrown in the dumpster, they take a chance hoping to become known, distinguish by their talent, get themselves noticed, but most of all… to be respected. The tragic irony makes that Finn Hudson, the star quarterback of the school’s football team, join them. However, he might pay a high price. Following his dreams, he risks losing his friends.
Seemingly flat and boring, but very realistic and powerful, the teachers give color to the show. Will Schuester, McKinley High’ Spanish teacher and the director of the Glee Club, is modest and doesn’t stand out, that until he intensely wants something. Music colors his life and lifts him out of the rut of a marriage that draws to an end. Both the coach of the cheerleading squad (“Cheerios”) and the Glee Club’s “arch-nemesis”, Sue Sylvester is “pure evil and doesn’t hide it”. She does whatever it takes to win. One the other side, Emma Pillsbury, the school’s guidance counsellor, is a large-hearted person, glad to help as the need arises. She’s terrified of germs and in love with… Will. Around them revolve many motley characters which make us roar with laughter.
“Glee” is a biting comedy for the underdog within all of us.
