The Mentalist vs. Psych

These two shows have in common the idea of someone pretending to be psychic.
In “Psych”, Shawn Spencer, a smart young man with amazing observation and perception skills, pretends to be a psychic. He opens a detective agency with his best friend Burton Guster.
Patrick Jane, the mentalist turned private investigator, uses his skills to help the police. He has the ability to spot minute details, but he does much more than that, he plays mind games with people and reads their emotions. The series takes on a more serious approach than “Psych”. The dynamics of the show go from funny to deeply disturbing in seconds.
If you want… “The Mentalist” can be seen like a darker version of “Psych”.

The creators of Psych have complained loudly that The Mentalist is just a rip-off of Psych, but since both The Mentalist and Psych are pretty much blatant rip-offs and modernizations of Sherlock Holmes (e.g. brilliant, hyper-observant guy with a disregard for authority and orthodox methods solves unsolvable crimes), I don’t think either of them have much room to complain.
Plus, I like both Psych and The Mentalist. They’re both cool.
