Will your favorite TV shows be renewed or canceled?

With the beginning of 2009-2010 season, the networks re-engaged the battle for supremacy in terms of television ratings. Along with the apparition of the first figures, some rubbed their hands with contentment while others began to sift the wheat from the chaff. The results… the shows that don’t bring home the bacon will disappear from the small screens. The first which kicked off was “The Beautiful Life”. Thus and so, statistics with shows that have chances to receive a new season, those who are in danger of being canceled and those that have the best “chance” of being canceled stepped into the picture.
Last year, Tvbythenumbers took a shot and they were right. Determinant seems to be the so-called “Renew/Cancel Index” resulting from the division of a show’s viewers rating and the network’s average rating. Last year, the initial Renew/Cancel Index was 0.92 and this year they’ve set it at 1.00. The TV shows with Index under 1.00 have a good “chance” of being canceled, those with the Index around 1.00 are in danger and the ones over this Index are safe.
Factors that could cause a show to be renewed with a well below average Index:
- (F) – Fridays… most of the series that were airing on Fridays have been renewed, although their Indexes were significantly lower than average.
- (S) – Syndication… TV shows which are drawing near syndication (66-88 episodes) have more than often economic factors that trump ratings leading to renewal.
- (T) – Third Party… the series that have a share of their cost underwritten by a third party can be renewed, although their ratings are substantially lower.
- (P) – Produced by the network’s production company… the shows which are produced by the network’s corporate production company can have more chances of surviving… For real losers, it’s unlikely to help.
